The 14 year old Shaka who is 6’ 1” and weighs 210 pounds lives in Ward 7 of Washington. He has been training with NOMIS Youth Network since he was 10 years old and has developed into a first class boxer with great potential.
Shaka is in the 8th grade at Meridian Public Charter School and plans to attend Spingam Senior High School in the fall where NOMIS runs an afterschool program for young men and women ages 14 to 24. The popular Boxing Intervention, Junior Olympics Boxing and Enrichment Summer Camp and Boxing Academy programs help youth learn the self-discipline and resiliency that boxing requires and apply those skills to all aspects of their lives.
NOMIS has been helping children and youth through boxing intervention since 1995. The successful program combines physical fitness training and conditioning, Junior Olympic Boxing instruction, health and wellness training (including sexual health and diet and nutrition), homework assistance, and counseling and mentoring.
With grants from the Washington Redskins, the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, The DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation, the DC Department of Human Services Income Maintenance Administration, the Capitol Hill Community Foundation and many foundations, churches and individuals, the program has grown and developed over the years.
Robert Simon, III, NOMIS Youth Network executive director and Shaka’s trainer, says that Shaka has the potential to be an Olympian. Simon said, “He is our first national champion, a natural athlete who has taken well to training and works very hard to be the best he can be. He has great potential as a boxer and we’re eyeing the Junior Olympic Boxing Tournament and the Junior Golden Gloves tournament in July. If he continues to develop as a boxer, he’ll be a world champion.”
